Digital Media Literacy Action Plan: My Roadmap to Responsible Digital Engagement
This plan is about being more intentional with how I use digital and social platforms, not just consuming content but actually understanding, evaluating, and controlling my digital presence. As a person who works closely with these platforms, I am cautiously optimistic about their mass onslaught. Parents particularly should be careful about how and when their children interact online.
Step 1: Set My Goals
My focus is on three key areas that have the biggest impact on my day-to-day digital behavior.
I want to improve how I fact check information before sharing it, strengthen how I manage my personal data and privacy, and become more intentional with the content I consume and post. These areas directly affect how I show up online and how I interpret what I see. I would like to improve how I communicate online by being more intentional in discussions, I would love to explore tools that support continuous learning and professional development.
Even with a trained eye, AI can fool you. I am very careful about sourcing pictures or data when I am posting. I would have never thought I would have to do that on a regular basis, but we have arrived at that point.
Step 2: Analyze My Current Digital Habits

I spend a few hours daily on platforms like Instagram and Facebook mostly consuming a mix of news, trends, and entertainment. A lot of information comes quickly, and I recognize that I don’t always pause to verify it before forming an opinion. I have given up TikTok after the Chinese government and data security brouhaha.
Privacy settings are another area where I realized I haven’t consistently reviewed everything across accounts. Like most people, I set things once and moved on, which isn’t enough with how often platforms update policies. I will make it a priority to review settings on a regular basis. We now know that company default settings are not the holy grail as they were once thought to be. We have to check and check again.
Step 3: Set SMART Objectives
I’m keeping my goals realistic and measurable so I can actually stick to them.
– I will verify at least two sources before sharing any news related content.
– I will review and update all my privacy settings within the next 30 days.
– I will reduce passive scrolling by setting daily limits and being more aware of how I spend my time online.
– I’ll check my progress weekly to stay accountable and adjust if needed.
Step 4: Take Action
For privacy, I will update account settings, enable two factor authentication, and start using tools like DuckDuckGo to limit tracking. For misinformation, I will make it a habit to verify information using trusted sources like Snopes before reposting or engaging with content. For content sharing, I will be more intentional about what I post and ensure I give proper credit when sharing other people’s work. For digital balance, I will build in screen free time daily and clean up my feed by removing content that doesn’t add value.
Step 5: Track and Reflect
Instead of overcomplicating it, I’ll do a simple weekly check in. I’ll look at what I shared, whether I verified it, how much time I spent online, and what adjustments I need to make. The goal is consistency and awareness, not perfection.
Commitment to Growth
Digital literacy is not something you complete once. It’s something you build over time. My goal is to stay aware, keep learning, and adjust my habits as technology continues to evolve. Honestly, I see my life improving overall if I treat social media like alcohol and fatty foods, in complete moderation.
